About

The Hospital of God has a long and proud history of working with vulnerable people living in the North East of England. Established in 1273 by Bishop Robert de Stichell to help poor and elderly people, throughout the centuries we have taken this founding ethos and developed into a modern organisation meeting a range of 21st century needs.

As part of our tradition, the Hospital of God holds Christian values, though we work with people of all faiths and no faith. You do not have to be a Christian to work for us or to access our support. We are committed to promoting dignity and respect for all people, as well and love and compassion for those who feel they may benefit from some extra support.  We constantly work to make sure that the Hospital of God is indeed Here for Everyone.

At the Hospital of God we are committed to promoting fair working practices for all. We do not advocate the use of zero hours contracts, and are proud to pay our compassionate and dedicated staff above the minimum wage.

Having adapted and developed for the needs of successive generations for nearly 750 years, the Hospital of God is always looking for new areas of growth and ways we can help vulnerable and marginalised people in the 21st century. Our grant making facilities means that every year we give approximately £90,000 local organisations who work with disadvantaged people. We have in total given over £1million in grants, all of which has been used to support people living in the ancient diocese of Durham. In addition to making grants, the Hospital of God is always looking forward to new projects that we may be able to deliver as an organisation. For details of upcoming developments in the charity, please check our blog posts. Similarly, if you or your organisation has an idea for a project which you wish the Hospital of God to be involved with, please feel free to contact us.

The Hospital of God continues to respect our traditional values and whilst developing and moving forward, so that we may continue to support those who need our help in our communities.

The Hospital of God: Here for Everyone.
